5.4 earthquake near Mobile Edge Corporate Office

Matthew Olivolo July 29th, 2008

At 11:42 a.m. (PST) there was a 5.4 magnitude earthquake that shook all of Southern California, including the Mobile Edge Corporate Office located in Anahiem.  The epicenter was located in Chino Hills, Calif., approximately 10 miles from our office.  Although the staff and products were jolted around a bit, everyone and all products are fine.  All orders will ship on time without a hitch.

The shock waves felt more like waves traveling through the building rather than sharp jolts.  From several news organizations, rolling shock waves actually cause less damage than the sharp snaps as felt in the Northridge Earthquake back in 1994.

Below is a copy of a map of the Epicenter.

The new ScanFast collection of laptop bags by Mobile Edge have created quite the buzz. Recently, John Biggs from the New York Times posted a review of the new collection in the Personal Technology Section.

Although competitors are working to release clam shell case designs, our design team actually put some time and effort into our new designs. This new ScanFast Collection consists of a backpack, a briefcase and a messenger bag, all designed to conveniently open for airport screeners and help speed travelers through the X-Ray screening process.

ScanFast Backpack by Mobile Edge. Here is a brief overview from the New York Times article:

With frustration mounting at airport security lines, something had to give.

The Transportation Security Administration has decided to give frequent travelers a break. When laptops are placed in certain cases, such as the ScanFast line from Mobile Edge, the agency does not require them to be removed for screening.

While many laptop-case manufacturers, including Targus and Skooba, are planning checkpoint-friendly cases, Mobile Edge will ship briefcases, backpacks and messenger bags next month (Sept).
The ScanFast bags separate the laptops from surrounding pockets, ensuring a clear picture in an X-ray machine.

Most bags still will have to be opened, but the Mobile Edge bags flip back to offer an unobstructed view of the laptop inside.

You are the first to see the new Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bag designs by Mobile Edge. As previously mentioned in this blog, the Transportation Security Administration requested laptop bag manufacturers to create Checkpoint Friendly laptop bags. The TSA had clear guidelines for manufacturers to follow, ensuring airport security screeners could easily scan the laptop while it was still inside a laptop bag.

The design team quickly responded and came up with three new designs, a Backpack, Messenger Bag and Briefcase as designed to accommodate a laptop with a screen up to 15.4″.

Tested on airport X-Ray machines, this new collection of laptop cases are TSA compliant. Here is a sneak peak just for Mobile Edge Blog readers…

TSA Screener looks on as passengers go through checkpoint.

Several articles from today’s news posted in the New York Times, USA Today, Dallas Morning Star and several others including blogs sites like Gizmodo and Endgadget, informed travelers about new Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bags. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) posted a Request For Information (RFI) to laptop bag manufacturers asking for their help to make Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bags.

The TSA gave specific requirements they wanted the cases to have, and manufacturers had to submit their designs to the TSA for approval. These new bags designs in theory will help relieve some of the time required to check bags through airport screening checkpoints.

Mobile Edge has answered that TSA request and came up with three superior designs. We first developed a laptop Briefcase with easy access panels to allow airport screeners to properly screen your bag without having to remove the laptop. We then created a laptop Messenger Bag with ergonomic handles again with an easy access panel for easy screening. However, the most ingenious design incorporates a laptop Backpack. This backpack also has an easy access panel allowing the screeners to properly screen the belongings without removing the laptop. Our design team had to be creative in their concepts, and have since created three great laptop bags that are sure to help out travelers pass through airport check-point screeners quickly and efficiently.

The new Mobile Edge Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bags are scheduled to hit stores sometime in the fourth quarter of this year.
