Sumo Laptop Purse reviewed on The Gadgeteer

Matthew Olivolo September 17th, 2009

By Anita Z, Gadgeteer Technology Editor

The Sumo Laptop Purse (by Mobile Edge) is not just a laptop bag, it is a laptop PURSE. And yes, there is a difference. If you are anything like me, you end up carrying several different bags daily, including a laptop bag, purse, gym bag, lunch, etc. Hooray for laptop purses like this one made by Sumo, because they combine at least two of these bags (if not more) into one stylish carrying tote.

Sumo Laptop Purse, photos by Anita Z. of The GadgeteerThe Sumo Laptop Purse is a good solution for attacking the bag challenge many of us face. It holds plenty in its several compartments and pockets. The purse comes in two laptop sizes including 13 inch and 15 inch. Sumo says the laptop compartments can fit a 13 inch MacBook, 12 inch Netbooks and 15.4 inch laptops. The 13 inch model I checked out fit my 13 inch MacBook nice and snug. I had to remove my laptop sleeve in order for it to fit the compartment. It also fit a 12 inch Dell Inspiron well.

The laptop compartment has a padded corduroy lining to keep your laptop cozy. As shown in the picture, the compartment is open at the top which leaves the laptop exposed inside the purse.

Besides the laptop compartment there are 5 additional compartments. A power cord fits in any of the two larger compartments. Unlike some laptop bags, the Sumo Laptop Purse has plenty of room left over for purse contents. I had no trouble dumping all my purse items into the laptop purse. In my case this included a pocketbook, sunglasses, bottle of sunscreen, spiral notebook, a coupon filer, file folders, pens, keys, digital camera, phone, iPod and headphone. The felt lined compartment is a good place to keep your sunglasses from getting scratched.

On the exterior of the purse there are two front zip pockets and a side pocket. One of the front pockets includes a nifty headphone hole for your mp3 player. The pocket itself is kind of tight which makes accessing your player a little tough but it does manage to keep your earphones in a convenient place rather than tangled in a ball at the bottom of your bag. If it were up to me I would suggest a clear window for the front pocket to make pushing the buttons on your iPod easier so you don’t need to take it out of its pocket every time. The side pocket is large and convenient place for your phone or PDA.

The leather shoulder straps keep the bag comfortably under your arm. Even with all that stuff in it, the weight does not dig into the shoulders. The bag manages to distribute the weight nicely. The exterior is made of sturdy nylon ballistic material with leather detailing. The bottom of the bag is reinforced in leather.

I can see this bag coming in handy for travel as well as daily use. It fits a lot and holds it comfortably. This is especially a good solution for urban city dwellers as it lends well to being carried on public transit and walking with purpose! Although a bit pricey, this could be a good investment for a laptop purse.

The Sumo Laptop Purse comes in a three color/stitch combinations including black with white stitch, Black with pink stitch and red with white stitch. Other nice touches on this purse include the cute zipper pulls with the Sumo logo and Sumo logos lining the inside.

Remembering 9/11

Matthew Olivolo September 11th, 2009

The American Flag whips in the wind at Ground Zero on 9/12/01

It’s been eight years since September 11, 2001. It is a day that no one will ever forget. Speaking with scores of people in various states, the sentiments all seem to be the same. Everyone remembers where they were when the tragic events transpired that day.

I personally was living in New York on Long Island as a young Marine Staff Sergeant. I was a combat correspondent and happened to be driving over the Verrazano Bridge coming from Brooklyn and going to Staten Island. I was on my way to take photos of a Marine recruiter that had recently achieved an outstanding award.

As I was driving across the bridge I was listening to the traffic report on KNX-1070 (traffic report is mandatory when driving in NYC), and heard the North Tower was hit by a low flying aircraft.

Looking over my shoulder I could see one tower engulfed in flames. I quickly drove into Staten Island and parked in the harbor looking across the waterway to lower Manhattan and started taking photos. It was mass chaos with emergency vehicles scrambling to the scene. Then the second plane hit. It was at that point everyone knew this was deliberate and we were under attack.

Soon after, the Pentagon was hit. Then the last hijacked plane crashed in a desolate field in Pennsylvania. My thought while I watched the two towers burn was, how the hell will they be able to put the fire out??? Once the buildings collapsed it was at that point I knew we as a country would never be the same.

The next day I went down to Ground Zero and took hundreds of photos. Out of all the photos I took, this one was ironically inspiring to me. There stood the American Flag, proudly whipping in the wind right next to the remains of the World Trade Center. To me this showed the world our resolve as a country and our relentless will to fight.

I will never forget the thousands of innocent people that died that day.

The cast from NBC's Chuck
If you haven’t seen the TV Show Chuck on NBC you are missing out.

The show is about a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government’s most vital secret agent.

The comical part of the show takes place inside a computer electronics store called Buy More Electronics. A perfect fit for Mobile Edge Laptop Bags.

Prominently displayed on a shelf directly across from the center of the set is a shelf filled with Mobile Edge Laptop Bags featuring our new ScanFast Element Briefcases for women in Pink Suede, Forest Green Suede and our popular Chocolate Suede. Product placement is great for brand recognition, and being affiliated with a popular TV Show like Chuck is a terrific opportunity to show viewers just how stylish Mobile Edge Laptop Bags really are. After all, Mobile Edge offers more than 300 different products all geared to be mobile with your electronics. Whether it’s a 17” MacBook Pro, a Dell 16” Inspiron or an ASUS 10.1” Netbook we have you covered.

Be sure to look out for Mobile Edge products on the upcoming season of Chuck starting soon on NBC.

Although the plot of the show is a little zany, it is great comedy with terrific actors.
Here is a brief recap of how this computer store “geeky” guy becomes a very popular man by government officials.

Entering the Warner Bros Studio compoundWhen Chuck opens an e-mail subliminally encoded with government secrets, he unwittingly downloads an entire server of sensitive data into his brain. Now, the fate of the world lies in the unlikely hands of a guy who works at a Buy More Electronics store. Instead of fighting computer viruses, he must now confront assassins and international terrorists.

With the government’s most precious secrets in Chuck’s head, Major John Casey (Adam Baldwin, “My Bodyguard”) of the National Security Agency resumes his responsibility of protecting Chuck. Casey’s partner is the CIA’s top agent (and Chuck’s dream girl), Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski, “Gone”). They try to keep him safe by trading in his pocket protector for a bulletproof vest.

Chuck airs on NBC Monday nights. For more information about Chuck, click here.

Mobile Edge ScanFast Messenger Bag Reviewed

Matthew Olivolo September 4th, 2009

By Michael Kwan, Mobile Mag Technology Editor

Among the many other frustrations that you may face while traveling, lugging out your laptop to get through airport security can take up too much time and it can expose your notebook to potential damage. That’s why the TSA regulations allow for “checkpoint-friendly” bags where the laptop can stay put and one such example is the ScanFast Laptop Messenger Bag from Mobile Edge. The messenger bag style is trendy enough for college students, but the jet black appearance is also professional enough for traveling corporate executives.

Scans Fast and Stays Tough
You might remember my review of the Mobile Edge Ultra Portable Backpack for Netbooks last week and how I commented on its lack of a checkpoint-friendly design. The ScanFast Messenger is a little bit bigger, but it’s still reasonably compact and it does that whole checkpoint-friendly thing without a hitch.

Top view of thew new ScanFast Messenger Bag by Mobile Edge. Photo by Michale Kwan, Mobile Mag.Holding laptops with up to 16 inch widescreen displays, the Mobile Edge ScanFast Messenger Bag uses the same durable ballistic nylon as all of the other bags in the Mobile Edge collection. This is super tough and should be able to withstand the usual wear and tear that you’d get from flying, bandying around town, and hopping from appointment to appointment.

Three Pockets to the Front
In terms of design, one of the more unique features on this bag is the set of three vertical pockets in the front. As you can see, this is decidedly different from what I experience with the V7 Premium Toploader Laptop Case, which had a much “cleaner” appearance from the front.

At first, I thought the aesthetic was quite strange for this bag, but after using it for a couple of weeks, I found the trio of pockets to be very versatile and remarkably useful. This gives quick access to peripherals and accessories without having to dive through a main compartment and look through some inner pockets. Your mileage may vary, but one of these pockets could be a good place for a laptop power supply too. That’s a big bonus in my book.

Speaking of Interior Compartments
Opening the front flap on this bag reveals two main compartments. There is one area that is single slot-like space that would be fine for documents and files. The other main compartment, depicted above, is further broken down into a series of pockets that can be used to store whatever else you’d need. You’ll also notice the mesh pocket on the other side, providing even more storage.

Interior shot of the Mobile Edge ScanFast Messenger Bag. Photo by Michael Kwan, Mobile Mag.Some people prefer a simpler design, since it can be easier to find what you need, but I prefer having a lot of separate compartments to store all the different things I need when I travel. Mobile Edge really delivers on this front and these pockets are great for flash drives, business cards, spare memory cards, and even digital cameras and batteries. I love it.

Flipping Open for Airport Security
While some other checkpoint-friendly bags put your laptop in a wholly separate compartment, Mobile Edge takes a different approach. Inside the largest compartment is an over-sized pocket for your laptop and this is clearly marked as being checkpoint friendly. Your laptop isn’t completely enclosed, but this means that you skip an extra zipper.

The ScanFast Messenger will take up to 16 inch laptops and you can see my 14.1-inch Dell Inspiron in there with room to spare. The padding is adequate for basic protection and the zippers allow for a quick open-and-close for airport security scans.
This compartment is usually dedicated to just the laptop, but you’ll notice that the other side has an interior zipper. That’s right. You’ve got another compartment for files, folders, documents, or whatever else you’d like to slot in there. This is a good place for your airline tickets and that kind of thing.

A Solid Option for Frequent Flyers
Of the checkpoint-friendly laptop bags that I have tried, I think that the Mobile Edge ScanFast Messenger Bag is easily one of my favorites.

Red Dell Inspiron 16" and Red Mobile Edge Eco-Friendly Messenger Bag a perfect fit!Dell is a great company and has produced some really cool laptops over the past decade, including the Dell Inspiron™ 15.6″ I am using to write this blog post.
