Travel Tips to Battle H1N1 Virus

Matthew Olivolo November 18th, 2009

I ran across this article today on Lifehacker.com about the upcoming travel season and the threat of acquiring the H1N1 Virus. With the holiday season fast approaching us, here are a few tips that me be worth adhering to.

Travels waiting to board their planes.

By Sarah Rae Trover, Lifehacker Editor

Sure H1N1 is the trendy flu virus to have this year, but the idea of being sick through the holiday season isn’t all that appealing. If you’re flying the friendly skies over the holidays, try taking a few precautionary measures.

Before you bust out the hazmat suit while waiting for your connecting flight, consider following some of Forbes.com’s tips for helping you get through your holiday travels bug-free.

Before you take off, learn about current status of H1N1 at your destination and any other vaccines you might need. In addition, find out what resources might be available in the event of an emergency and who you could call. If you are going to a less developed country, talk to your doctor about bringing anti-viral drugs like Tamiflu.

Forbes continues to remind us that if you fly sick, there is the chance you will be quarantined at the airports in order to keep contamination down, so either put on your best face or try renting a car if heading home to see family is your main objective. Don’t forget, if you’re traveling and the area near you is out of liquid Tamiflu, you can always make your own from the tablet version.

Mobile Edge leads Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bag Category

Matthew Olivolo November 18th, 2009

Mobile Edge was one of the first laptop bag manufacturers to introduce TSA Compliant Laptop Bags to the market. TSA Officials tested the ScanFast Collection ensuring each case adhered to their guidelines. Mobile Edge now offers 13 different styles of ScanFast Laptop Bags designed for both men and women leading the category.

The ScanFast Laptop Bag Collection was designed to help move you through airport security checkpoints quicker. You no longer need to remove your laptop from your approved case. Simply unzip the bag all the way down on both sides of the bag and lay it flat on the X-Ray Belt. No need to use a gray bin. Once you go through the medal detector you are good to go. Simply pick up your bag and you are on your way.

Here is a short video which highlights the new TSA Guidelines and Mobile Edge ScanFast Cases.

Ultra Portable Netbook Messenger Bag Reviewed – CNET

By Dan Ackerman, CNET Senior Editor

CNET Editor's Rating - ExcellentA laptop bag lives or dies based on its shoulder strap. Even a great-looking bag, with plenty of useful pockets and extra padding, will sit disused in the corner if the strap isn’t comfortable, or is prone to sliding off your shoulder. The $49 Mobile Edge Ultra Portable Netbook Messenger Bag scores big for a heavily padded, very comfortable shoulder strap, plus an airport-friendly zip-open compartment.

That said, this has quickly become one of our favorite laptop bags, in part because it’s designed for smaller laptops, from 10-inch Netbooks up to thin 13-inch systems such as the Apple MacBook. The outside of the bag measures 15 inches by 10.5 inches and is 3 inches thick, and the latest MacBook just barely squeezed into the interior laptop compartment.

Photo by CNET - Edge Ultra Portable Netbook Messenger Bag by Mobile EdgeThat interior laptop compartment is not padded (but the two outer walls of the bag are). Instead, the laptop compartment has a see-through plastic front face, with the words “Checkpoint Friendly” printed in big, white letters, and the entire bag zips open in the middle, to allow it to pass through airport metal detectors without removing the laptop. Keep in mind you must have the laptop alone, no wires or accessories, in its own compartment to comply with TSA rules.

The opposite face of the interior laptop compartment has a large, flat zippered pocket built into it, while an entirely separate zippered compartment in front of the laptop area has a few small pockets for pens and small items, but is otherwise unadorned. Under the front flap are two small webbed pockets, and a small, clunky looking Velcro pocket sits in the middle of the outer flap. We were pleased to see a plain, flat pocket on the rear surface, good for holding newspapers and magazines–that’s always a useful feature in a laptop bag.

The adjustable shoulder strap has a large, gel-like pad in the middle, and was probably the most comfortable strap we’ve tried. It made the bag easy to carry, even when packed with a laptop plus books and accessories.

One road warrior’s list of the must-have gadgets, devices, and services to make life out of the office a bit more bearable.

I’ve been on the road so long that I recall being labeled a “high-tech business traveler” because I owned a dual-time-zone watch and a carried a phone card rather than a pocketful of coins to feed a public phone.

To say that the tools of business travel have come a long, long way in the last 30 years is an insane understatement. In fact, now we suffer from high-tech overload. There’s a temptation to adopt every new gadget or software gimmick, stuff it in our carry-on bag, and take it one the road—just in case.

Worst of all, high technology has robbed us of control of our own schedules. Back in the day, the only way our offices could reach us was when we chose to call in from our hotel room or a pay phone. We were able to go about our business on the road while someone else worried about what was going on back in the office. But with email, texting, cell phones, BlackBerries, and iPhones, it’s never acceptable to be out of touch. So we end up having to balance the work we’re doing on the road and all the minutiae back in the office. Even for experienced multitaskers, that’s a lot to manage while battling airline delays, snarky hotel clerks, and the occasional crazed cabbie.

Mobile Edge ScanFast Briefcase - A Business Travelers best Friend Yet retreat is impossible. We’re all high-tech travelers now, and we might as well make peace with the cornucopia of options in front of us. And if the following choices seems sparse—almost a Luddite’s list—remember that it’s not the amount of stuff you use, it’s the time you save using what you choose to carry.

One Great Flight Tracker
Whether you prefer the online or the mobile version, FlightStats is the killer app for keeping track of flights and delays. It’s easy and intuitive to use and offers the best array of useful historical data.

One Great Computer Manager
To keep abreast of what’s stored where on my various computers—home and office machines, laptop and Netbook – I rely on LogMeIn. I think it’s the best of commercial services that offer Web-based remote computer access, support, and management. There are several versions at several price points, and each offers plenty of flexibility. The free version suits my needs just fine, but your mileage may vary.

One Great WiFi Roaming Service
The world is full of WiFi hotspots, but most of them are behind a confusing array of high-priced firewalls. Boingo vaults you over most of those walls at a fair price: $9.95 a month for unlimited access in North America or $59 a month for unlimited global access. More than 125,000 hotspots accept Boingo, including the WiFi systems at more than 500 airports and 20,000 hotels.

One Great External Drive
I’m an electronic generation behind because I’m still using thumb drives for my external data-storage needs on the road. But the world now belongs to huge-capacity external hard drives that fit in your pocket. The OWC Mercury doesn’t even require an AC adapter. Its 3.5-by-5.5-by-1-inch drives, which store up to one terabyte of data, can be powered by FireWire and USB ports. The eGo Portable hard drives come in stylish colors (red, silver, blue, and black), are even smaller than the OWC Mercury, and look vaguely like hip flasks. Prices for external hard drives start at about $75 depending on storage capacity.

And one important fact Joe didn’t mention was a laptop bag to carry all of your travel gadgets, so I did.

One Great Laptop Bag
It is important for travelers to be mobile, have the ability to take their work laptop and other accessories with them on the road. That’s where the new ScanFast Laptop Bag Collection comes into play. Designed for business travelers, this new Collection of Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bags allows you to keep your laptop inside the bag when passing through airport security checkpoints. TSA compliant laptop bags help you move through security lines quicker. This helps you keep track of your laptop and other valuable electronics once they go through the X-Ray screening. Often times your gear makes it through the screener faster than you do, so your items are left at the end of the security X-Ray belt unattended and easily pilfer-able.
