Mobile Edge Backpack featured on NBC’s Community

Matthew Olivolo April 23rd, 2010

The comical TV Show “Community” on NBC has some great actors, and the writers truly are geniuses. Mobile Edge products can be seen on various episodes including this one with actor Alison Brie who is in love with her new TPS Backpack. In this scene Alison flaunts how she received the case for free and it’s the best bag she’s ever owned.

Sadly, at the end of this episode her co-star Joel McHale who plays the lead role sabotages the laptop backpack by shredding it and hanging it up in a hallway on the school campus for everyone to see. It is a sad moment for her (and us). However, in an upcoming episode Alison will have the opportunity to choose a new Mobile Edge laptop Backpack from her college bookstore for her to use in the entire next season.

iPad Sleeves by Mobile Edge

Mobile Edge iPad Sleeve ideal for iPad and other electronic gadgets

Gadgetboy Icon

By John Federico, Gadgetboy

My iPad arrived on Launch Day and I didn’t have anything to protect and carry it. (At least not something that was designed for it, anyway.)

So, I visited my oft-neglected Netbook (an Acer Aspire One A150 with an 8.9 inch display, 1.5 GB of RAM and a 9-cell battery) and stripped it naked of it’s neoprene sleeve – a SlipSuit Neoprene Sleeve Case from Mobile Edge.

My iPad fit nicely inside with barely a hint of extra space thanks to the gusset that protects the device from getting scratched by the zipper. I had considered this just a temporary solution until I remembered my Aluratek CDM530AM portable 3G hotspot and my USB 3G dongle. Both fit perfectly in the outside pocket along with my iPad power brick, a USB extension cable and the sync and charge cable with the 30-pin dock connector that comes with every iGadget these days.

The sleeve is well designed with solid stitching, smart design and nice attention to detail that I would highly recommend for your iPad.

Bottom Line: If you want a solidly constructed case for your Apple iPad with some extra storage for accessories, the Slipsuit Neoprene Sleeve for 10? Netbooks from Mobile Edge is great choice.

TSA says iPads are Checkpoint Friendly – Mobile Edge Blog

Matthew Olivolo April 7th, 2010

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Blog, iPads are “OK” to keep inside your case when passing through airport security checkpoints. However, if you have your Netbook or Laptop you will still need to remove it from your bag unless you have a Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Case.

TSA Screener passing through a Mobile Edge ScanFast BackpackHere is the official blog post from the TSA.

E-readers, Net Books and other small gadgets are becoming more and more popular for travelers to bring along in their carry-ons. (iPad, Kindle™, Neo, Nook™, Sony® Reader™ etc.)

Not only are they essential to those who need to stay connected and work or study on the go, but they are also fantastic time killers, which makes these gadgets extremely popular carry-on items. I’ve read many a post from people wondering if these items should be treated like a laptop and removed from their carry-on bags for checkpoint screening.

Great question! Electronic items smaller than the standard sized laptop should not need to be removed from your bag or their cases. It’s that simple.

It’s important to remember, however, that our officers are trained to look for anomalies to help keep air travel safe, and if something needs a closer look, it will receive secondary screening. The key to avoiding bag searches is keeping the clutter down. The less clutter you have in your bag, the less likely it will be searched.

Only electronics the size of a standard laptop or larger (for example Playstation®, Xbox™, or Nintendo®), full-size DVD players, and video cameras that use video cassettes must be removed from their carrying cases and submitted separately for x-ray screening. Removing larger electronics helps us get a better look at them and also allows us to get a better look at the contents of your bag. If you you have a TSA “checkpoint friendly” laptop bag, you can leave your laptop in. For more information click here.

Mobile Edge ScanFast Netbook Briefcase now Checkpoint Friendly

Matthew Olivolo April 6th, 2010

Mobile Edge ScanFast Netbook Briefcase - On of the first Checkpoint Friendly Netbook Briefcases on the market

The redesigned ScanFast Netbook Briefcase is ideal for traveling with your small ultra light Netbook computer. Now when passing through airport security checkpoints, you can leave your Netbook in the briefcase keeping it safe and secure.

In an independent study conducted by the Ponemon Institute, more than 12,000 laptops are left behind or stolen at airport security checkpoints each week nationwide. By using a ScanFast Checkpoint Friendly Laptop or Netbook Bag, you will not have to worry about someone easily slipping your Netbook or Laptop into their bag. Your worries are gone as your computer will safely be secured in your case.

In addition to possibly being pilfered, you will not have to worry about dropping or damaging your laptop or Netbook when taking it out of the case. You will be one of the studious travelers as you pass through security checkpoints like you work for the TSA. (metaphorically speaking)

Lastly, the new Apple iPad will fit securely into the ScanFast Netbook Briefcase, however I would recommend the iPad be in a protective sleeve. Because the iPad is so thin (a mere 1/2 inch thick), it may be a little loose in the Netbook compartment. However, if the iPad is in a sleeve it will give your new tablet enough girth to be fastened down by the overlapping Velcro tab.

LA Times Magazine features Sumo Messenger

Matthew Olivolo April 5th, 2010

Jod Kaftan - LA Times Magazine Senior Writer By Jod Kaftan, Senior Editor, LA Times Magazine

Yesterday’s nerd was a social pariah. He wore tucked-in terrycloth shirts and spent his Friday nights taking apart a radio and putting it back together. Now that same nerd has stock options, a girlfriend and a Tesla.
He’s still trying to figure out how to triangulate style, and one obvious way to accelerate his evolution is to get him a sick messenger bag for his second brain, the notebook computer.

Sumo Camo Messenger Bag by Mobile EdgeIf he’s carrying around one of those cheap leather Office Depot numbers, he’s still reminding everyone about his real DNA—dorksville. The messenger bag made its mark with a kind of tribal group of bike messengers from New York City who famously swore at pedestrians as they nearly broke bones with their tread. That’s a pedigree that will help any nerd project the darker, more mysterious energy most men need so they don’t get mugged. I’m not saying a cool messenger bag will turn Bill Gates into Randy Couture, but it’s a start.

Here are a few of my favorites:
• For the taciturn geek who hasn’t showed a flicker of emotion since Stephen Hawking’s last movie, a colorful unisex bag might serve as a kind of Patch Adams to make him leave his shell. The Sumo Messenger Bag takes some bold steps with Asian-style textiles and color but never allows form to upstage function. There’s a pronounced lack of Velcro under the flap, so when our nerd opens his bag he doesn’t sound like he just opened his wallet from 1979. Getting rid of the wallet will be for another post.

Traveling with your new Apple iPad

Matthew Olivolo April 5th, 2010

Apple released their iPad this weekend and people flocked to Apple stores like the release of their iPhone. Most all of my Facebook friends all over the country talked about how they were anxiously awaiting their local Apple Store to open as they were waiting in line. Although I am jealous I did not get one this weekend, I will get one very soon.

New Apple iPad... Need a sleeve?Traveling with your iPad should be an enjoyable experience. I ran across this article today from AirSafeNews.com which discussed how the TSA will react to this new tablet. The jury is not out yet whether it will be categorized as a Laptop, Netbook, or an e-reader. Regardless, to be safe unless your new iPad is in a safe protected Checkpoint Friendly Case you may still have to take it out of your bag when passing through security. Here is the article from AireSafeNews.com.

Apple recently released their new iPad computer. While much of the media coverage has focused on the technological innovations and limitations of the device, AirSafeNews.com has a different focus – how this type of computer will affect the average air traveler. After a couple of days of testing and evaluation, AirSafeNews.com’s Todd Curtis has a few thoughts about this machine, and some of the issues this device may raise for air travelers.

Security issues and the iPad
For years, airline passengers have been required to take out laptops and other large electronic devices out of their carry on baggage for separate screening at checkpoints. The classic laptop computer opens up like a clam shell to reveal a keyboard and a screen. Given the design of the iPad (it has no keyboard) and it’s relatively small size and light weight (much smaller and lighter than the average Oprah magazine), it does not make sense to treat this device as one would a laptop computer. In other words, there is no real need to take it out for separate screening.

One could certainly make the argument that it is possible that someone bent on destroying an aircraft could pack an iPad with explosives, making it necessary to separately screen the device. However, the counter argument is that there are many other items (including the aforementioned Oprah) that have much more room to work with than an iPad, and that don’t have to be taken out of your carry on bag. Unless there is some other compelling circumstance, for example, a passenger selected for special screening, there is no reason for TSA to worry about an exploding iPad.

You should also take steps to protect your iPad from loss, theft, or damage. First, don’t put it in checked baggage. The risk of damage from rough handling and theft is always high for expensive and fragile items like electronics. Also, if you are asked to check your carry on at the last minute, be sure to take out your iPad and other small and valuable items from your carry on and place them in a smaller bag that can fit under your seat.

Going online in the airport and in the air
While iPads have many functions that work without having access to the Internet, most of the really interesting functions require that you be online. Fortunately, airports around the US are embracing the use of free wi-fi in the terminals, making it easy to get online before you get on the plane. Only a handful of airlines offer any kind of in flight Internet access, so make sure you have your music, books, and videos loaded into your iPad before you take off.

In flight entertainment and common sense
While the iPad is not very convenient for doing typical business related functions like creating or editing documents, it is an excellent device for web surfing and video playing in small spaces like the typical seat back tray in coach. Given an estimated battery life of 10 hours, a passenger can provide entertainment during a transatlantic or transpacific flight.

Because of its ability to play very high resolution videos, it will be a great platform for playing movies, with better performance that most laptops when it comes to brightness and clarity.

Mobile Edge Mini Messenger redesigned for new 14.1″ laptops

Matthew Olivolo April 1st, 2010

Mobile Edge Mini Messenger Collection designed for small ultra portable Netbooks and smaller laptops

I am the Public Relations Director for Mobile Edge and would like to point out that our Mini Messenger was originally designed for smaller laptops, Netbooks and DVD players with screen sizes up to 14.1”. During the past 18 months, laptop manufacturers have moved to a 16:9 aspect ratio 14.1” wide-screen format which makes the laptop/notebook wider but not as tall.

As a result, Mobile Edge has increased the size of the Mini Messenger by 1.25” (in length) so that it will accommodate these new wide-screen notebooks. Most on-line resellers are using the updated specifications to describe the Mini Messenger. Unfortunately, there are still some of the original sized units in inventory within our distribution channels.

If you purchased a Mini Messenger on the premise it would fit your 14.1” laptop and have received one of the original sized units, Mobile Edge will gladly exchange your case for the newer larger version at no charge. Please contact me, Matthew Olivolo at mo@mobileedge.com to arrange for a product exchange. We appreciate your understanding.
