What makes a Mobile Edge laptop bag TSA compliant?

Matthew Olivolo December 16th, 2011

If you have ever wondered what makes a laptop case Checkpoint Friendly, then you have come to the right place. Here is a brief overview of the guidelines the TSA has in place, and how Mobile Edge was one of the first laptop case manufacturers to produce and have TSA compliant laptop bags to market.

In March 2008, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced plans to implement new security procedures that would allow travelers to pass through airport security checkpoints without having to remove their laptops from their cases. Simultaneously, the TSA issued a request to laptop bag manufacturers to create “Checkpoint Friendly” laptop bags to help speed up security lines, allowing passengers to get to their departure gates in a timely manner. These new cases help shorten wait times for more than 250 million passengers that travel annually in the U.S.

TSA gave specific guidelines they required for each laptop bag to comply with in order to be TSA compliant or Checkpoint Friendly. The laptop compartment must be independent and clear of any other gadgets, cords, metal zippers, etc. TSA screeners must have a clear unobstructed view of the laptop itself. As long as these strict requirements are met, the new designed laptop bags would be cleared for use at all U.S. airports. If laptop bags do not meet these specific guidelines that will not be considered Checkpoint Friendly and the traveler will have to remove their laptop or Ultrabook from their case.

Mobile Edge was among the first manufacturers to offer Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bags in the marketplace. Their ScanFast™ Collection of Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Cases exceeds all TSA guidelines to be Checkpoint Friendly. In fact, the Design Team at Mobile Edge took the TSA requirements one step further and made the padded computer compartment see through with large writing for TSA agents to easily read, “Checkpoint Friendly.” Business travelers sent feedback to Mobile Edge announcing how easy their trip was going though security checkpoints thanks to their new ScanFast laptop case they purchased.

The TSA does not officially endorse any private company’s products, so companies cannot claim their cases are “TSA Approved.” However, companies can say their laptop cases are TSA compliant if they meet their astringent criterion.

Mobile Edge leads the Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bag category by offering 14 different styles of TSA compliant laptop cases designed for both men and women. Mobile Edge is known for their stylish women’s laptop cases and now offers six different styles of Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Cases as part of their ScanFast for Her Collection. All Mobile Edge Laptop Bags come with a Lifetime Warranty.

Women’s Tablet Briefcase reviewed in Macworld

Matthew Olivolo December 14th, 2011

By Lauren Crabbe, Macworld Technology Editor

The latest Mobile Edge Woman’s Netbook Briefcase does a good job of looking stylish enough for a young professional woman without crossing over into giant-purse territory. This bag is undeniably a briefcase, but the faux-leather-on-microfiber exterior adds a touch of femininity to an otherwise androgynous accessory.

Thanks to a reinforced bottom and thick sides, along with a padded sleeve, the bag provides considerable protection to your laptop, yet the bag is surprisingly light. Your 13-inch MacBook Air or MacBook Pro is secured by a thick, Velcro fastener, and there are plenty of pockets and straps to hold pens, chargers, notepads, and—at Mobile Edge’s insistence—lipstick. The bag includes a matching cosmetics pouch, but you can use the pouch, about the size of a MacBook’s AC adapter, for storing accessories. The bag’s hardware, which secures leather handles and a removable, adjustable, padded shoulder strap, is sturdy.

The design of the bag makes it convenient for holding—and accessing—a lot of stuff. The zipper runs all the way to the bottom of the bag on both sides, so you can fan the bag open to search for, well, a tube of lipstick. (Flaps of the bag’s cloth lining keep your stuff from falling out with the back fully open.) If you can’t quite fit all of your work inside the bag’s 4-inch-across interior, there’s also an outer pocket for documents or a magazine. The briefcase also sports small, metal feet so the bottom never gets dirty, as well as a Velcro-attached strap for sliding your bag over the handle of a rolling suitcase.

The Woman’s Netbook Briefcase has everything a professional woman might need in a briefcase. It’s simple without being too utilitarian and stylish without being too eye-catching.

Mobile Edge supports Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Matthew Olivolo December 9th, 2011

The Orange County Susan G. Komen Affiliate hosted their annual Grants Award Breakfast last week at the Westin South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. Mobile Edge is a proud corporate partner with Susan G. Komen for the Cure nationally, and close partner with the Orange County Affiliate.

I had the opportunity to see just how the individual grants are awarded to local breast health care facilities. Wonderful people and clinics helping under privileged families that may not have the money to pay for a mammogram screening, or even health care for individuals who have breast cancer and need treatment.

As a local and national sponsor, it was very rewarding for me to see the individual lives every dollar impacts locally and nationally. Mobile Edge helps raise money for Komen in several ways. Locally, Mobile Edge produces 2,000 cancer survivor bags for the OC Race for the Cure each year and also donates Komen Laptop Bags to individuals who raise more than $6,000 for the Foundation.

Nationally, Mobile Edge donates to Susan G. Komen for the Cure with a minimum contribution of $25,000 annually. However, most of the time Mobile Edge exceeds that amount based on sales. Mobile Edge donates 10% of the retail sales price of each Komen Caring Case they sell, back to the Foundation.

To date, Mobile Edge has contributed a combined amount more than $325,000 and counting. Visit the Mobile Edge Caring Case Collection and see how you can help raise money for such an amazing organization and cause.
