Matthew Olivolo October 28th, 2011

Mobile Edge is a Proud Partner of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and we are committed to helping fight Breast Cancer as a life threatening disease. We feel it is our Social Responsibility to give back to those in need. To do our part our designers were inspired to create the Caring Case Collection, which is comprised of pink-themed laptop bags all toting the symbolic pink breast cancer ribbon. Mobile Edge donates 10% of the retail selling price of each case in the Caring Case Collection directly to Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.

Mobile Edge is proud to announce that since 2004, we have partnered with Komen for the Cure and have contributed more than $300,000 to the fight against breast cancer. We are not surprised to hear that the Komen Foundation was just awarded the Non-Profit with the Biggest Impact on Cancer Award. Here is a press release with the details.

Charity Evaluator GuideStar Rankings Affirm Komen’s Leadership in Research, Community Outreach, Advocacy and Global Mission

DALLAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the world’s largest breast cancer organization, has also been named the cancer non-profit making the biggest impact in cancer advocacy and outreach by independent charity evaluator GuideStar.

The Number One ranking from GuideStar’s Philanthropedia arm is based on the assessments of 46 experts from 25 non-profits, universities and businesses, who reviewed 73 cancer non-profits and identified just 16 “top” cancer organizations. Komen for the Cure led that list.

“This is a tremendous recognition of the hard work that Komen staff, Affiliates and volunteers do every day to help women and end this disease,” said Komen founder and CEO Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker. “I know that every one of our employees, volunteers, donors and partners feels the tremendous pride I feel, knowing that our work is noticed and held in high regard.”

Komen has invested $685 million to breast cancer research and another $1.3 billion to community health and education programs since its founding in 1982. The organization currently is funding more than 500 active research grants totaling more than $300 million to institutions worldwide.

Komen’s research focus is on treatments for aggressive and metastatic disease, disparities in outcomes, preventive strategies and environmental issues in breast cancer, with a goal of bringing science from the laboratories to the public in the shortest period of time.

In communities, Komen and its 120-plus Affiliates partner with almost 2,000 organizations nationwide to provide treatment, aftercare, education and screenings, with a focus on getting low-income and uninsured women access to care. The organization funded 700,000 breast screenings last year and provided financial and social support to 100,000 women, helping to provide medical co-pays, prosthetics, child care, groceries and aftercare support programs.

Komen’s advocacy arm, the Komen Advocacy Alliance, preserved $100 million in public funding for breast cancer programs in 40 states this past year, while Komen’s global outreach expanded to more than 50 countries.

Brinker founded Susan G. Komen for the Cure in 1982 after promising her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer. “Our mission has never wavered since that promise,” Brinker said. “We are here to end suffering from this disease through research, education, and by providing real help to women and men in our communities.”

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and the leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide, with 1.6 million new cases of breast cancer expected in 2011 and 465,000 deaths. In the U.S., breast cancer is expected to be diagnosed in more than 230,000 women with 40,000 deaths this year. A woman dies of breast cancer, somewhere in the world, every 74 seconds.

TSA-Approved Laptop Bags That Aren’t Ugly – Techlicious

Matthew Olivolo October 21st, 2011

By Jennifer Gaines, Techlicious, Travel & Entertainment Editor

Confession: I think checkpoint-friendly laptop bags are the anti-fashion. Because of this, I’ve chosen to forgo function and maintain style, but many of my more practical traveling companions would happily ditch fashion for the chance to move through the security line a bit faster.

I talked to those practical travelers to ask them their opinions of checkpoint-friendly laptop bags, a.k.a. TSA approved, and the response was overall very good. The frequent flyers who use these bags often say they typically get through the line without hang-ups. The most common complaints: cost and style.

This takes us back to my function vs. fashion dilemma; I searched high and low for TSA approved laptop bags that aren’t ugly, and the selection of ladies’ bags is quite dismal, I must admit.

But here are a few that made the cut for style and function:
The Mobile Edge ScanFast Element Briefcase is one of the most high-tech bags out there. It not only includes a section just for your laptop, making it TSA compliant, but it also has a wireless security shield to keep your devices safe.

If you’re in the market for a checkpoint-friendly laptop bag, it’s a good idea to cross-check its components with the Transportation Security Administration guidelines for compliant laptop bags. That said, I should remind you that the airport security screening process can be random, so just because you have one of these bags doesn’t mean that you won’t be asked to remove your laptop. As many of the practical travelers told me, the bags usually do the job, but not always.

Mobile Edge supports the Troops

Robert, a Helicopter Crew Chief in the U.S. Army is a longtime Mobile Edge customer. He called in to Mobile Edge customer service after he had a slight rip on his backpack. His dilemma was he needed his backpack repaired or replaced within a quick period of time because he was leaving for Afghanistan with his unit.

Since Robert explained his situation, our customer service team wanted to ensure they had the backpack fixed or replaced in as little amount of time as possible. He sent his ScanFast 2.0 Backpack back to customer service at the Mobile Edge corporate headquarters.

When the backpack arrived, our Office Manager, Debbie Miller went to work. After identifying the problem, our best bet was to replace the Backpack with a new case utilizing the Lifetime Warranty.

Our shipping manager expedited shipping back to Robert in order to ensure delivery of his backpack before departing overseas. The ScanFast 2.0 Backpack was delivered with time to spare and Robert has used the backpack while in Afghanistan for several months now. He took the time to send in a few photos of him and his backpack thanking us for our superior customer service.

“Although all of customers are equally important to us and we try to make the return as quickly as possible, we made sure to expedite the process for Robert in order to get his backpack there before he and his unit deployed,” said Miller. “It’s the least we can do considering what he is doing to protect us here at home.”

From all of us here at Mobile Edge, thank you Robert for serving our country and for sending in your pictures while deployed overseas. We wish all the best and a safe return home soon.

West Point Cadets love Mobile Edge Backpacks

Matthew Olivolo September 30th, 2011

The United States Military Academy at West Point is known as one of the world’s preeminent leader development institutions. The Academy Stores Director of Cadet Activities, Lenora Grable-Grant, met Noni Darakhshan, Director of Education Sales for Mobile Edge at a Trade Show and mentioned the incoming 2015 West Point Cadets were in need of new backpacks. Grable-Grant asked Darakhshan to submit a few laptop backpack suggestions to bid against other selections.

Darakhshan submitted a few ideas and had an idea for a custom backpack with an exterior ID badge holder to identify the individual Cadet.

“The customized Mobile Edge Backpack was a big hit with the Corp Of Cadets, the overall design, durability and features (i.e. pockets, storage units) were a big plus, explained Lenora Grable-Grant. “During the contract selection/testing phase, the Academy Stores conducted a survey amongst the Corp of Cadets and of the selection pool (5 different/varied backpacks) the Mobile Edge Backpack was chosen 7 out of 10 times amongst the 30 Cadets.”

Since the original design of this backpack bears a resemblance to a rugged military look and feel, it was not a surprise that the Mobile Edge Backpack was hands down the most popular amongst the Cadets.

“During the West Point Class of 2015 issue process, the upper classmen whom escorted the Class of 2015 Cadets were extremely complimentary of the design and durability of the backpack,” said Grable-Grant. “Several upper class Cadets (Class of 2012-2014) requested to purchase the backpack on the spot. The Cadets overwhelming noted that they were extremely satisfied with the overall makeup of the backpack and would highly recommend it to all.”

“Due to the overwhelming positive response from the Corps of Cadets, the West Point Academy Stores will definitely move forward with procuring Mobile Edge Backpacks in the future,” exclaimed Grable-Grant.

Mobile Edge ScanFast 2.0 Briefcase reviewed – Gadgeteer

Matthew Olivolo September 6th, 2011

Reviewed by Elizabeth Daugherty, Technology Editor, Gadgeteer.com

I really hate flying. I’ve never been a big fan. I hate the high prices, the long lines, the rules, the regulations, the baggage fees, what you can carry on and what you can’t carry on. Honestly, I wonder if it isn’t just easier to drive.

But since sometimes driving is out of the question, I either have to fly or take the train and either way, I have to go through TSA checkpoints.

Let me make something clear: I don’t try to sneak stuff on planes that I’m not supposed to have. I obey the rules. That doesn’t mean I like the shakedown at the checkpoints.

When I first found out about Checkpoint Friendly laptop bags, I was more than just interested. Finally, a company is doing something to alleviate some of the misery at TSA check ins.

Mobile Edge has taken this a couple of steps further. The Anaheim, California based company, mindful of the needs of the traveler has designed a series of bags; ScanFast 2.0, that allows faster check through. The ScanFast 2.0 is designed so that the lap top need not be taken out of the bag while going through the X-ray machine. The bag zips open like a clamshell and lays flat so that the laptop in the sleeve is displayed and need not be taken out of the bag, run through and then packed back up causing delays and hold ups.

Mobile Edge doesn’t stop there. They have actually designed a bag with the computer user and the environment and the economy in mind.

Going Green:
Mobile Edge didn’t stop at just the computer user. They went after the computer user who is concerned about the environment as well. Utilizing a polymeric material called Sorona®, this material is partially made from corn. That’s right…corn. Other bags use nylon or polyester but Mobile Edge, in conjunction with DuPont™, has incorporated corn into the main material of their products thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 63% over those petroleum based products. Did I mention it’s also stain resistant? Did I mention the solid construction and sturdy zippers?
