The latest Mobile Edge Woman’s Netbook Briefcase does a good job of looking stylish enough for a young professional woman without crossing over into giant-purse territory. This bag is undeniably a briefcase, but the faux-leather-on-microfiber exterior adds a touch of femininity to an otherwise androgynous accessory.

Thanks to a reinforced bottom and thick sides, along with a padded sleeve, the bag provides considerable protection to your laptop, yet the bag is surprisingly light. The zipper runs all the way to the bottom of the bag on both sides, so you can fan the bag open to search for, well, a tube of lipstick. (Flaps of the bag’s cloth lining keep your stuff from falling out with the back fully open.) If you can’t quite fit all of your work inside the bag’s 4-inch-across interior, there’s also an outer pocket for documents or a magazine. The briefcase also sports small, metal feet so the bottom never gets dirty, as well as a Velcro-attached strap for sliding your bag over the handle of a rolling suitcase.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Mobile Edge is proud to support the global movement to help find a cure for Breast Cancer once and for all.

Confession: I think checkpoint-friendly laptop bags are the anti-fashion. Because of this, I’ve chosen to forgo function and maintain style, but many of my more practical traveling companions would happily ditch fashion for the chance to move through the security line a bit faster.

I talked to those practical travelers to ask them their opinions of checkpoint-friendly laptop bags, a.k.a. TSA approved, and the response was overall very good. The frequent flyers who use these bags often say they typically get through the line without hang-ups. The most common complaints: cost and style.

This takes us back to my function vs. fashion dilemma; I searched high and low for TSA approved laptop bags that aren’t ugly, and the selection of ladies’ bags is quite dismal, I must admit.

But here are a few that made the cut for style and function:

I really hate flying. I’ve never been a big fan. I hate the high prices, the long lines, the rules, the regulations, the baggage fees, what you can carry on and what you can’t carry on. Honestly, I wonder if it isn’t just easier to drive.

But since sometimes driving is out of the question, I either have to fly or take the train and either way, I have to go through TSA checkpoints.

Let me make something clear: I don’t try to sneak stuff on planes that I’m not supposed to have. I obey the rules. That doesn’t mean I like the shakedown at the checkpoints.

A staple in your laptop’s wardrobe

My closet is full of work clothes, but I can only classify one outfit as “the perfect work suit”. My perfect work suit fits me like a glove. It looks good standing up for a presentation – it looks good sitting down for an interview. I can trust it to carry me through the day with confidence and it always adds a little spring in my step. The large front storage compartment is, like my perfect work suit, made to complement accessories. There are storage pockets for my electronic doo-dads, including a pocket that is lined with soft fabric. I put my iPhone there to keep it scratch-free.

There’s also plenty of room for my A/C adapter and various cords. The cushioned, corduroy laptop sleeve is positioned in the middle of the bag, acting as a divider between front and back storage sections. My 15″ MacBook Pro fits perfectly. The manufacturer states that it will fit a PC laptop up to 11″ x 16″ x 2″, and this is realistic. When packed up, the center-positioned sleeve made the bag extremely comfortable to wear. Rather than a rigid laptop against my hip, the storage area next to my body had a more give and the bag felt more balanced.
