Vertical Laptop Messenger Bag by Mobile Edge

Matthew Olivolo May 15th, 2008

The new CuteBug Hipster was reviewed by Technology Editor Sarah Meyer from Notebookreview.com. She liked the styling and laptop protection the Hipster provided. Check out her review below.

By Sarah Meyer

Mobile Edge released the Cutebug line of bags, hipsters and clutches - all designed by Maddie Powers - a few months back and we got one in for review recently. The Cutebug Hipster has the iconic trademark of the line but will it measure up to its peer’s quality wise? Can a bag that is so slim really be useful to a notebook owner?

Design and Aesthetics

The Mobile Edge Cutebug Hipster by Maddie Powers comes in pink and burgundy with black accents and hardware. The company says it will soon be releasing black and green versions and already have a sample picture up on the website.
All the burgundy sections of the bag seem to be made out of velvet like material and the front of the bag has Maddie Powers’ trademark “pulp magazine images from the 40s and 50s” along with the text “ideal Love magazine” and “Believe My Heart.” In the bottom corner there is a Cutebug logo.
Mobile Edge Hipster reviewed by Notebookreview.comIf you flip open the magnetic front flap, there is a medium sized zippered pocket, an id/business card holder and three pen/pencil pockets. You can fit a thin wallet, cell phone, a digital camera, MP3 player, etc. in the medium sized pocket. On the inside of the flap there is a clear id pocket.
The bulk of the bag is dedicated to carrying a 14.1″ notebook and comes with a removable pink neoprene sleeve. The sleeve is pretty typical with a soft inside lining to prevent scratching. There is one large zippered pocket on the inside of the bag but will only fit a thin paper notebook while the laptop is inside the bag.

The back of the bag is completely covered in that same burgundy velour material as the front and there is another large zippered pocket. It could be used to a hold a paper notebook or other slim accessories.

The shoulder strap is not removable but the soft non-slip padding is, if you’re not a padding kind of person.

The Cutebug Hipster and all the products in the Maddie Powers line are for a specific kind of person. They are trendy but border on kitschy, although not so much in quality, as the hipster seems very well made.

Mobile Edge BEF Laptop Tote product review

Matthew Olivolo May 8th, 2008

The lovely Technology Editor Sarah Meyer of NotebookReview.com took time to review the Mobile Edge BEF Signature Tote. To read the full review click on the link listed below.

By Sarah Meyer
Mobile Edge is giving back to two great causes through their Caring Case Collection. They give 10 percent of the retail sales from any case in the collection to either the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation or the Boomer Esiason Foundation to fight Cystic Fibrosis.
I reviewed the Komen Paris Backpack in December and now I have the chance to review the BEF Signature Tote. And while the BEF Signature Tote is connected with a great cause (and a good football player, Go Bengals!); I’m still testing this tote to make sure it is worth your money.

Design and Aesthetics
Mobile Edge BEF Signature ToteThe Mobile Edge BEF Signature Tote comes in black with silver accents and hardware with the stitching all in white. The front of the tote has two silver buckles and a small BEF logo in blue at the top. On both sides of the tote there are smaller silver buckles and on the right hand side of the bag, a detachable phone pocket.
The BEF tote does zip shut at the top and the straps are flattened at the top to keep the bag from slipping off your shoulder. The inside of the bag is lined in a soft tan, suede-like material as is the outside of the accessory pouch.
The tote is fairly open but is spilt into two “sections” separate in the middle by the notebook compartment. The section closest to the front of the bag -where the BEF logo is located - has two large open pockets. These would be perfect for large wallets/billfolds, a power brick, wireless mouse or other medium to large sized accessories. There is also an enough room to fit one thick textbook, binder, paper notebook or similar item along with the laptop without the tote getting too bulky.
The second section consists of three pockets and four pen/marker holders. The largest pocket is a zippered one at the top of the tote. It could be used for keys, a digital camera, a MP3 or other small accessories that you want to keep in a slightly more secure pocket or just want to keep handy.
Below this pocket is a Velcro closing pocket lined with Mobile Edge’s Wireless Security Shield. It is suppose to be used to store cell phones or PDA’s and keeps them safe from hackers.
The third pocket is just an open pocket with a business card holder attached to the outside. It’s great for small office supplies like post it notes or a small calculator.
The notebook compartment is in the middle of the two sections and can fit up to a 15.4″ computer. The bottom of the compartment is lined with Mobile Edge’s SafetyCell Computer Protection and the sides are expandable for extra thick notebooks. There is an elastic Velcro strap that can be tightened or loosened depending on the size of your notebook.
Also inside the bag is a small removable accessory pouch that is perfect for make-up or other items you are afraid might leak since it’s lined with nylon.
The bottom of the bag is hard and seems to be made from leather. There are four small silver feet to keep the bag from dragging the ground constantly.

Using the bag
The BEF tote is stylish without screaming, “Look at me!” I liked the simple design and understated black and silver color choices. The only label on the entire bag is the small half inch BEF logo and it’s barely noticeable.
How comfortable I was carrying this tote was a nice surprise. I got sunburn on my shoulders the weekend before I started carrying this, so I was sure I was in for some pain with this tote. The flattened straps took some weight off and stayed in place, and while I did have some discomfort (this tote isn’t made out of air) I was pleased nonetheless.

Mobile Edge Sheba laptop bag video review

Matthew Olivolo May 7th, 2008

Tech editor Sierra Modro from GottaBeMobile.com did an in-depth video review of the Mobile Edge CuteBug Sheba, designed by Maddie Powers. Here is a brief overview of what she wrote and a link of her video review below.

By Sierra Modro

I love bags. All shapes, all sizes, but especially the funky bags and especially anything retro and girly. When I was at CES, I came across the new line of women’s bags from Mobile Edge designed by Maddie Powers. These bags are definitely not your average black computer bags!

Mobile Edge has a complete line of Maddie Powers bags, including messenger bags and more traditional briefcases (with a twist). I was sent a CuteBug Sheba by Mobile Edge to review, and let me first say, what a adorable bag! Granted, I really like pink and not all people do, but… wow! Totally eye-catching and distinctive. This is not a bag that will blend in. And that’s just what I was looking for.

With this bag so focused on being stylish, my immediate concern was that it wouldn’t be functional. Luckily, the Sheba is as functional as it is attractive. This is a small bag, so don’t expect to carry everything you own in it, but it can hold more than you may think. Check out my video to see more about the carrying capacity of this fun bag. It’s also possible to over stuff the bag given the way the Velcro is used. You can close the Velcro in a wide range of positions to accommodate large loads. Given that the neoprene computer sleeve is removable, this bag actually can fill a variety of needs, not just lugging around the computer. It seemed to be relatively durable and has no visible marks after daily use for over a month.

This bag would be a great gift for a woman of any age who likes to stand out a bit in the crowd. (Hint: Mother’s Day is this Sunday) If you need a larger bag, check out the Sheba’s big sister, the CuteBug Laptop Messenger bag. It has similar styling, but it accommodates up to a 15.4″ screen system. With a large green graphic and purple velvet trim, this is also a very distinctive bag.

Mobile Edge laptop bags featured on Malaysian Blog

Matthew Olivolo May 6th, 2008

A fashion blog site from Malaysia called Emmagem featured the Mobile Edge Caring Case Collection along with our Faux-Croc Portfolio Collection. Recently, there has been quite a Buzz about our products in Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. I think they discovered how stylish our products truly are.

Mobile Edge Komen Full-Grain Leather Tote Here is a brief overview of the review which did include a few other laptop bag companies.

By Karen Marie

We’re afraid laptop bags are not cheap, if not then it would not serve its purpose as a laptop bag, would it? Laptop bags need to be sturdy and it has to protect the laptop most importantly.

Get a bag with bold colors instead, if you cannot find a stylish bag. . . Here are some suggestions. . .

The Mobile Edge Komen Full-Grain Leather Tote. This bag reminds me of the Coach tote! This online store ships to Malaysia, rest assured, as told by one of our readers earlier!

Mobile Edge laptop bags featured on ABC News

Matthew Olivolo May 5th, 2008

ABC News Technology Reporter Andrea Smith featured three Mobile Edge laptop bags in a Mother’s Day Gift Idea segment on the local ABC affiliate in New York City. She showcased the Komen Milano, the BEF Signature Tote and the Monaco Notebook Case.

She talked about some of the functionality of the laptop bags while her co-anchor modeled the Komen Milano. She made sure to mention that Mobile Edge donates 10 percent of the sales price back to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Foundation for research and awareness. Her personal favorite of the three designer laptop cases was the BEF Signature Tote. Click the video below to see the review.

Mobile Edge SlipSuit A Perfect Fit

Matthew Olivolo April 28th, 2008

Check out the recent review on the new Mobile Edge 17″ MacBook Pro SlipSuits on a popular blog site called the after Mac located in Manila, Philippines. These custom laptop sleeves fit MacBook Pros like a glove. Check out the post.

By Juan Magdaraog

Mobile Edge 17\ I got an email from Mobile Edge through this blog. I must admit I haven’t heard of the brand until they sent me an email. I checked out the their web site and was pleasantly surprised with their products. It looks stylish and the price is reasonable. My particular interest is the SlipSuit for the 17? MacBook Pro.

What I like about this is that it has pockets outside for accessories. It’s perfect if I want to bring my MacBook Pro around but don’t really want to bring a big bulky bag. If I want to just go to the next building or meet someone in a nearby coffee shop, I don’t really want to bring my computer bag. This works well.

Here are some specs from the web site.

* Soft, durable and water-resistant Neoprene protects and cushions your laptop
* Small enough to fit inside your regular carrying case, but tough enough to use by itself
* Stylish design combines form and function to create a unique laptop carrying solution
* Heavy-duty nylon strap
* Full-size external pocket for AC adapter, files, CDs and other accessories
* Lifetime Warranty

Although on “paper” it does look well, I haven’t seen one in person so I want to reserve judgment till I do so. But so far it looks good. Go check out the Mobile Edge web site.

Mobile Edge SecurePack reviewed on Lintcoat

Matthew Olivolo April 16th, 2008

Security is always a threat, and Mobile Edge created a backpack that helps keep pick-pockets and would be thieves away. Because the SecurePack has no exterior pockets there is no way for anyone to grab your electronics while wearing the backpack. The only way to access your gear is to take the backpack off your shoulder where there is a hidden zipper. Excellent design I must say.

Mobile Edge Securepack fits 17Motorcycle riders love this aerodynamic design too, as the waist strap keeps the backpack positioned on your back correctly. The reflective trim helps when riding at night. The fact it accommodates a large screen 17″ laptop is a great option too.

Check out the review posted on Lintcoat.

Ideal for computers with screens up to 17”. Exclusive security system, prevents access to interior while backpack is being worn. Roomy interior with pen holder and pockets for CDs, iPod™, PDA, keys and accessories. Water-resistant material, waist belt with adjustable straps at the top of the bag for snug fit, reflective stitching and aerodynamic shape make it a great laptop backpack for motorcyclists.

Best of all a dedicated exterior media pocket for MP3 or CD player with pass-through port for headphone cable. So, if you’re looking for a great bag grab, this is one for school, hiking or everyday on the go use. Yeah it’s that cool.

New Mobile Edge laptop bag featured on Popgadget

Matthew Olivolo March 25th, 2008

The lovely editor Evan Hosie from Popgadget reviewed the new Mobile Edge CuteBug Messenger in her laptop bag round-up. She loved the pulp-icon images used on this vintage looking laptop bag. As a voice in the industry, compliments from her certainly carry a lot of credibility. Here is a brief clipping from her review.

By Evan Hosie
When I started out in business (dinosaurs still roamed the earth), women had no choice in laptop bags; you had to use a “man” bag, a boring black utilitarian-looking thing. Thank goodness that’s all changed. Today we have choices of laptop bags that look like stylish, expensive handbags: fun, flirty ones that weigh nothing yet cradle your laptop, rock n’ roll choices, retro bags, functional yet pretty roller bags. Your bag says as much about you as your FaceBook page these days.In our ongoing effort to narrow down choices for our discerning readers, we present a round-up of road-tested laptop bags. (For those of you taking notes, our scientific study utilized a 15-inch MacBook, with all the peripherals, and unless otherwise noted, all tested fit a 15.4 inch laptop.) And we will be giving away one of almost all these bags, so make sure you’re signed up to our newsletter!

Mobile Edge CuteBug Hipster designed by Maddie PowersMobile Edge for Her

No one is going to mistake you for a staid executive with this sassy laptop bag called the “Maddie Powers,” which holds up to holds up to a 15.4″ laptop. You probably already know Mobile Edge for their superior bags, but recently they decided to start designing for women. As the company spokesman says, “We knew we were missing something. We then decided to break down our collections into two categories, one ‘For Her’ and one ‘For Him.’ It is that simple. Our women’s Collection was designed by women for women.” As you can see, the Maddie Powers collection (priced at $90) showcases the covers of authentic pulp magazines & digest novels from the 1940s and 1950s.

What’s to love about this bag:
- Superior “SafetyCell” computer protection
- Opposing velcro straps allow over-stuffing (you could literally use this as an overnight bag, it’s that big)
- Cell phone pocket
- Interior zippered pocket for organization
- Removable soft shoulder pad
- Accessorized with “Lucky Seven” dice
Designed by Maddie Powers

Mobile Edge also has a beautiful line of Komen bags and they donate 10% of the sales price of each Komen laptop bag they sell back to the Foundation. I have my eye on the pink leather tote. To read the full review click here.

Mobile Edge CuteBug Hipster on Coolest-Gadgets

Matthew Olivolo February 21st, 2008

Mobile Edge CuteBug HipsterCarolyn from Coolest Gadgets dot com wrote a brief review of the CuteBug Hipster vertical messenger bag right before Valentine’s Day. She is another admirer of the vintage themed cases Mobile Edge introduced to the marketplace. As the industry leader in stylish laptop computer carrying cases and accessories, this new line of vintage themed laptop bags round out the extensive Women’s Collection of designer laptop cases.

Here is an overview of what Carolyn had to say about the new Hipster:

Yes, we’re ramping up to Valentine’s Day. Yes, I’m sure you’re sick of me talking about all the great gifts you can buy for Valentine’s Day. Well, too bad - there are too many Valentine’s Day themed gadgets and gadget accessories to not write about them! You’ll have to suffer through a few more days.

I saw this adorable laptop bag over at Techie Diva today: the Mobile Edge CuteBug Hipster vertical messenger bag. This pink and burgundy bag comes with the following features:

* Fits 14.1? laptops
* Superior padding for computer protection
* Removable matching neoprene laptop sleeve
* Interior zippered pockets
* Exterior rear zippered pocket
* Removable soft padding for shoulder strap
* Interior ID pocket
* Accessorized with “Lucky Seven” dice

Also on the Mobile Edge website, it shows two other color options (green and black) that will be available soon. I like the fact that you can take the laptop sleeve out so you can use it as a functional messenger bag for those times when you do not want to take your laptop with you. And the “Lucky Seven” dice accessory adds a nice, whimsical touch to the vintage advertisement-adorned bag.
