Mobile Edge launches new UltraPortable Computer Sleeves!

Matthew Olivolo October 10th, 2008

Mobile Edge UltraPortable Computer Sleeves

Technology evolves quickly, so it’s important as a technology company to advance in unison.  The newest trend in mobile computing right now is UltraPortable Laptop Computers.  Manufacturers such as Asus, HP, Dell, Toshiba, Apple, Lenovo and others have all come out with Netbook computers in multiple sizes such as: 7 inch, 8.9 inch and 10 inch sizes.  These are actual computers! They really are the perfect companion for any road warrior.

The design team at Mobile Edge created three new UltraPortable Neoprene Sleeves to accommodate the 8.9 inch, and 10 inch Netbook Computers.  Of course the 8.9 inch neoprene sleeve will accommodate the 7 inch UltraPortable Computer just fine.

Mobile Edge UltraPortable Computer Sleeve with red pipingFor people that travel often, this new revolution of UltraPortable Computers is a great alternative. Traveling around with a large 17 inch wide screen can be cumbersome and can take its toll on your back and shoulders.  The new collection of Mobile Edge UltraPortable Neoprene Sleeves is the perfect solution for UltraPortable computers.  All three styles come with an attractive and affordable retail price of only $24.99.

Because the neoprene sleeves are somewhat form fitting, they can still fit into a larger bag or briefcase you already own.

There have been reviews posted all over the Internet praising this new wave of Netbook computers.  The cost of the new compact computers are very reasonable.  For the same price I paid for my new Apple iPhone, I could have paid for a new 8.9 Netbook.  (I had to pay full price for my new 16GB 3G iPhone because my contract with AT&T was not up for renewal.  I’m not bitter…)

The new sleeves are available in three color options and two sizes. Get your UltraPortable Sleeve today by visiting the Mobile Edge website!

Is your laptop safe when waiting for your flight?

Matthew Olivolo October 8th, 2008

Is your laptop safe?It has been reported in several publications like the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, PC Magazine and others on how vulnerable travelers are to thieves at airports.  I’ve personally seen first hand people traveling with their laptops, then placing the bag on the ground near their seat not paying attention to potential thieves.  This specifically applies to people who carry traditional styled laptop cases that are black and have a computer company name on them which screams “I have a laptop!”

Mobile Edge offers several styles of laptop cases that do not look like traditional laptop cases, therefore adding an indirect element of security.  From our women’s messenger bags, handbags or totes, to our men’s SecurePack laptop backpack, or our men’s briefcases and messenger bags.  All designed to not only protect your laptop, but to help protect our customers from potential thieves.

I ran across this article recently online and thought it was very applicable.  To read the full article click on the link below.

By Peter Wolcha, a blogger at Synch, a Tech Blog Site.

I had a coffee and an on-loan Apple iPhone, and I had settled into a chair at Toronto’s Pearson Airport, early for a flight to Vancouver. I was heading west to moderate a roundtable debate at one of two events run by Backbone and KPMG in support of our recent PICK 20 roundup of Canada’s best Web 2.0 companies.

This was an ideal time to review the agenda and my questions. Twenty minutes later my work was still unreviewed but it looked like my brand new Facebook account was ticking along nicely. Feeling I deserved a break I glanced around the gate area and noticed a rather well-dressed woman across from me. We were both sitting at the ends of our respective rows and she had placed an expensive laptop bag on the floor beside her. At the end of the row. Out of her direct sight. And she was reading a novel.

It occurred to me how easy it would be to steal the bag. She wasn’t looking, and if I stood up and coolly snagged it as I walked past, no one would notice. And I remembered a cop I had once met who did just that. He would hang out at airports and steal computers, and then stand around with other cops to see how long it would take for the owner to notice. Sometimes it took a long time. I decided to stroll around and see how many laptops I thought I could safely snatch. I spotted at least three.

That cop had a lot of good advice on thwarting thieves, and based on my airport stroll the most important one is really simple: if you put a bag on the floor, put it down in front of you, or between your feet, or loop the shoulder strap over the back of your chair. Do anything, in fact, that will get a crook to choose an easier target than you.

I could have grabbed three bags in a few minutes, and after a quick trip to a bathroom stall to transfer the valuables and dump the bags I’d be on the plane or out of the airport with a nice haul of both notebooks and the sensitive data stored on them.

I didn’t do that, but apparently lots of people do. The Poneman Institute estimates that last year up to 12,000 laptops were lost or stolen in American airports every single week.

Mobile Edge Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bags in Macworld

Matthew Olivolo September 23rd, 2008

Mobile Edge ScanFast Messenger Bag Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bags

Macworld Editor Dan Frakes, posted an article online about the Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bag requirements the Transportation Security Office posted for manufacturers.  Of the 40 manufacturers that responded to the TSA request, Mobile Edge is among the few manufacturers he mentions.  Beating most of our competitors to market with our ScanFast™ Collection of Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bags, we now have TSA Compliant laptop cases ready to purchase and have already shipped thousands of orders.

Here is a brief snippet of Dan’s article:

If you’re traveling to the US, it’s worth your while to get acquainted with the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA)’s announced new rules covering “checkpoint friendly” laptop bags. The goal of these regulations is to increase the speed and efficiency of airport security checkpoints by allowing passengers to keep their laptop computers in their bags during X-ray screening. However, there’s quite a bit of confusion about what, exactly, constitutes a checkpoint-friendly bag and the specific rules for using one.

What is a “checkpoint friendly” bag? According to the TSA, these are the criteria a laptop bag must meet to be considered checkpoint-friendly:

  • It must have a designated laptop-only section.
  • The laptop-only section must unfold completely to lie flat on the X-ray belt.
  • No metal snaps, zippers or buckles can be located inside, underneath, or on top of the laptop-only section. (In other words, metal elements must be positioned so they do not overlap the body of the laptop in an X-ray image.)
  • It cannot have pockets on the inside or outside of the laptop-only section.
  • Nothing can be packed in the laptop-only section other than the computer itself. (This is more of a guideline for packing than for designing a bag, although a laptop compartment that fits a computer perfectly makes it more difficult to fit additional items.)

Not listed in the guidelines, but mentioned on the TSA Web site under the topic of Industry Process and Guidelines, are warnings against thick bag dividers and thick emblems or seals on the laptop-only section. These elements can prevent security-checkpoint X-rays from obtaining a clear image of your laptop.

What kinds of bags meet these guidelines? Vendors are meeting the requirements in a couple ways. One is by designing bags that unfold so that the laptop section presents an unobstructed X-ray view. (There’s no restriction against having zippers, buckles, or other metal parts on the sides of the laptop section, as long as these parts don’t in any way obstruct the X-ray view of the laptop.) Another is by hosting the laptop in a basic sleeve or cover that detaches or can be removed from the main bag.

Apparently so. The TSA notes, in the Procedures article linked above, that over 60 manufacturers of laptop bags responded to the TSA’s announcement with intentions to create checkpoint-friendly bags, and 40 submitted prototypes to the agency for feedback. Since the new policy went into effect, a number of vendors have contacted us specifically to let us know that they have new or existing bags that meet the guidelines; these include Mobile Edge...

Mobile Edge Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bags in stock!

Matthew Olivolo September 17th, 2008

Mobile Edge ScanFast Laptop Bag Collection delivered.

This morning a large shipping container arrived with the new Mobile Edge ScanFast™ Collection of Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bags.  Our warehouse team began offloading the container first thing this morning.  The Mobile Edge warehouse is now filled with these new TSA compliant laptop cases ready to ship out to all of the pre-orders that we received over the past few weeks.

Back in March of this year, the TSA posted a message to laptop bag manufacturers to come up with design concepts for new laptop bags to be considered “Checkpoint Friendly.”  Our design team quickly went to work and created three custom laptop bags that all exceeded the TSA’s guidelines to be Checkpoint Friendly.

To date, Mobile Edge is the only manufacturer to create a Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Backpack.  The ScanFast™ Backpack accommodates laptops up to 17″.  Based on our sales trends, our design team decided to use traditional styles of laptop cases realizing that travelers like briefcases, messenger bags and backpacks.  So they used our superior designs and incorporated the TSA guidelines into the drawings.  The outcome, a new collection of laptop bags that will help you pass through airport security checkpoints quickly.  Now, when passing through security luggage checkpoints, you can leave your laptop in its case.

Each ScanFast case unzips all the way down on both sides allowing the airport screener full access to the laptop compartment.  This gives the screener a clear unobstructed view of the laptop and makes screening the case quick and easy.

The days of digging through your laptop bag for your computer, placing in a plastic bin and hoping it gets to the end of the X-Ray machine without being damaged are over.  Your laptop will remain in its case and remain safe and secure.

Save time, and get to your air carrier’s terminal with time to spare.  For more information, visit the Mobile Edge website.  I would order now because orders are coming in fast!

* TSA officials reserve the right to further screen a case at their discretion.

Apple just released their newest version of the Nano, which now comes in 8GB and 16GB versions. They also come in Nine different color variations. Laptops a must-have for college students

Matthew Olivolo September 3rd, 2008

In a recent article posted in the Wayne State University Student Newspaper, laptops are now considered the must-have when doing back-to-school shopping.

MacBook ProTaking notes on a laptop when in class is essential to modern day college life.  Colleges across the country have put in new WiFi access points to allow students free access to the Internet.  Typically, colleges will post where their WiFi locations are throughout the campus helping students connect to the Internet when they need to.

Of course when spending upwards of $1,400 for a new laptop, it must be protected.  An interesting point made in the University’s newspaper article, was that toting around a bag with a DELL logo on it means you are broadcasting to everyone that you are carrying a laptop.

“It’s best to use one of those non-descript cases, maybe a backpack where you can also put your papers or other stuff, and no one will think twice that you have a laptop in there,” stated Chris Demos, Lead Systems Administrator, Wayne State University.

Demos then went on to say, “When using a laptop at a public place, he advised to use  steelwire security cable, which he said acts as an excellent deterrent because it can take as long as 20 minutes to remove the cable and to do so inconspicuously would be impossible.”

Mobile Edge offers a solution for all of these concerns with one of the largest selections of laptop backpacks on the market.  We have backpacks that accommodate laptops up to 15.4″ and other ergonomic backpacks for larger 17″ laptops.  We have backpacks specifically designed for women and others for men.

Mobile Edge also offers one of the strongest laptop security cables on the market called the SecuriCable.  This cable screws into the computer’s serial or VGA port giving metal to metal contact for a secure fit.

Colleges students across the country purchase laptops and laptop accessories in their college computer book stores.  Mobile Edge products are offerd at hundreds of colleges across the country.  Rest assured, if you are a college student or the parent of a college student, Mobile Edge has the solution you need for mobile computing.

Mobile Edge Mini Messenger reviewed on Gadgeteer

Matthew Olivolo August 27th, 2008

Mobile Edge Mini MessengerThe new Mobile Edge Mini Messenger was reviewed by the well known Technology Editor, Julie Strietelmeier, from the Gadgeteer.

She gave her readers an in-depth perspective of the new Mini-Messenger which is designed for small Ultra Portable laptop computers, portable DVD players and digital cameras. Given its small posture, this messenger bag offers a lot for its size. The media pocket is perfect for storing your iPod, iPhone, or any MP3 player and comes with an easy access head phone pass through port.

Here is a quick overview of Julie’s review. To read the full review, click on the link below to go to the Gadgeteer Website.

By Julie Strietelmeier

Mobile Edge carries a nice selection of gear and laptop bags for both men and women. They recently sent me their Mini Messenger, which I’ve been using for a few days now to see how well it performs as an everyday bag for this Gadgeteer. Let’s see how it stood up…

Julie the Gadgeteer models the Mobile Edge Mini-Messenger.For quite a while now, my favorite style of gear bag has been the messenger style. I’ve been carrying the Timbuk2 Laptop Messenger since the beginning of the year.

However, I love this style for two main reasons. Reason number one: The flap can easily flop back and remain open. I typically leave mine open on my desk while I’m at work, or in the passenger seat of my car while I’m driving. Reason numberMobile Edge Mini-Messenger opened up sideways. two: Messenger bags usually have a large cavity for storage. I like pockets as much as the next person, but for the most part, I want a big open area that I can stuff large items into if needed - which I often do. I like the convenience of being able to carry the daily mail, newspaper and any packages that might have been delivered to my day job.

This bag is made of heavy-duty 1680D Ballistic Nylon and is available in four color styles, that include Black with Orange piping, Black with Pink piping, Black with Red front and Black with Silver front. I was sent the Black with Orange.

The materials and workmanship on this bag can’t be faulted. It’s a nice looking bag that can hold its fair share of gear and even a small notebook.
